Also know as: Camphor, Camphora, Kamfer

Camphor is made by distilling the bark and wood of the camphor tree. It is used for its scent, as an ingredient in cooking (mainly in India), as an embalming fluid, for medicinal purposes, and in religious ceremonies.

In the ancient Arab world, Camphor was one of the most popular perfume ingredients. According to the Perfume Handbook, “[Camphor] features in more than a quarter of al-Kindi’s perfume recipes and in many other medieval Arabic works, including the Arabian Nights Tales.“. The Chinese referred to the best camphor as “dragon’s brain perfume,” due to its “pungent and portentous aroma”.

Camphor is a well-established folk remedy, and is commonly used. Camphor seems to stimulate nerve endings that relieve symptoms such as pain and itching when applied to the skin. Camphor is also active against fungi that cause infections in the toenails.
