Voacanga africana is a tropical tree native to West Africa and is related to plants of the genus Tabernanthe or Iboga.
Voacanga africana has industrial (production of latex) and medicinal applications. Voacanga africana contains a large number of alkaloids related to the anti-addiction medication ibogaine. West African shamans used the bark of Voacanga africana as a brain stimulant, the roots were used as a stimulant during long hunts, while the seeds were used for visionary purposes.
The seeds of the Voacanga africana contain indole alkaloids, including voacangine (carbomethoxy-ibogaine), voacamina and related substances.
Germination of Voacanga africana seeds can take several months. The seeds must be sterilized before germination by leaving them for several minutes in water with 6% hydrogen peroxide.
