The caupuri has big knots in the stems which makes it very distinguishable from the Banisteriopsis caapi with smooth stems.
There are two scientifically accepted varieties:
- Banisteriopsis caapi var. caupuri with knotty stems
- Banisteriopsis caapi var. tukunaka with smooth stems
