Peruvian myrrh -Resin-

This Peruvian resin is somewhat of a mystery. We are not quite sure what species this particular resin comes from. As the Botanical name of the tree that produces this resin is unknown to us. The common name often used is ‘Peruvian myrrh’ as the origin of this resin is Peru. Despite the common name suggesting it’s a ‘Myrrh’ it’s clearly not a resin of the tree that produces true Myrrh incense, it’s not even closely related.

The smell of this resin is somewhat similar to that of Frankincense, al due it’s not a Frankincense either. It could be from either the genus Styrax of the Styracaeae or from the genus Myroxylon. It truly has the qualities of both benzoin and boswellia.

It has a musky aroma with hints of vanilla balsam and plain earthiness. It is quite complex and is clearly different than benzoin and boswellia and not as sweet as either.

How to Burn Peruvian myrrh Resin:

Light the charcoal with matches or lighter for about 20 seconds until it self-ignites. Use tongs to hold it up (never hold it with your fingers alone or you might get burned). Place the lit charcoal in a bowl or any incense burner. The bowl or incense burner should be filled with sand or dirt.  Let the charcoal warm for a few minutes. (It turns gray around the edges when it is ready)  Now you are ready! Add a small amount of Peruvian myrrh resin on top of the charcoal. The Peruvian myrrh resin will burn and soon release essential, aromatic oils through the smoke. Continue to place resins or powder on charcoal as they burn out and smoke decreases for a continuous burn.
